From material choice to quantity estimate
Material suitability and quantity are separate decisions. A calculator can estimate a specified product; it cannot establish that a product meets your project's requirements.
- Identify the project and its intended use.
- Read the applicable material guide and check any design or manufacturer requirements.
- Confirm the exact supplier product, grading and relevant specifications.
- Measure the area and intended layer depth.
- Use a relevant available calculator with compatible density and material-state assumptions.
- Check order units, delivery conditions and the final quantity with your supplier.

Common material questions
- Is crushed limestone the same as crusher run?
- No. Limestone describes rock source; crusher run typically describes a dense-graded crushed aggregate with fines, which may be limestone or another rock.
- Why do gravel size numbers vary?
- Numbers can reference an aggregate gradation, a state transportation specification or a supplier label. Confirm the governing specification and sieve distribution.
- Is drainage rock just regular driveway base material?
- Not necessarily. Clean or open-graded aggregate may be selected for water movement; dense-graded base aggregate often includes fines for stability. Select according to the specific system.
- Why does density matter when ordering?
- Project dimensions give volume. Converting that volume to tons requires the appropriate bulk density and whether the figure represents loose or compacted material.
- How do I compare tons and cubic yards?
- There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Tons measure weight, so converting cubic yards to tons also requires a product-specific density—there is no universal conversion.
